i have just started breeding bloodfins tetra. i have a female right now as I type in a shallow tank with broad leaf plants and a male. she looks very full. She is dropping eggs i can see. i don't know if she has been spawned by the male. My question is would she be dropping eggs 5 hours after being in the tank separated from the other fish? Is there a chance that she is dropping unfertilized eggs? I would love some advise. thank you everyone.
If I understand this right, she WAS in a tank by herself, and now she's in a tank with a male, apparently dropping eggs, and you want to know if this is normal.
If that's the case, then the answer is yes. Egg-scattering fishes very often start spawning very soon after being put into a new tank with suitable mates.
Tetras are egg scatterer's, they toss their eggs at random. Plus Tetras eggs are fertilized externally. If the male is not swimming very close with/behind her then chances are the eggs are not getting fertilized.
