Guppy birthmother question

Nother question:

Does the birth mother usually die after giving birth? I have now set up a smaller fish bowl with a 5gal airstone in it for raising my fry... but I just had two females give birth in the 2 way breeders and they died.

Is there any way to increase female survival rate? Is this normal?

Not normal, but not uncommon.

Sometimes the mothers die from improper care during pregnancy, e.g. improper nutrition. But, in some cases, it's not your fault. The mother could have been a poorly bred fish herself.

To increase the survival rate, give her the best care possible: less stress, nutrient rich varied diet, and of course a clean aquarium.

In many cases it's the little breeder trap to blame. A fishymomma left by herself in a 10 gallon tanks full of bushy plants will usually live, as will the fry, while the mothers in those little cages don't do as well. They hold the fry in as long as they physically can, you see, looking for a good spot to drop them. They see no good reason to drop them in the little baskets, and sometimes when they have to they spazz out and croak. Diet and other general conditions also play a big part in it.

Gotcha.

They are fed right now a combination of tetra tropical flakes, and both freeze dried and frozen blood worms.

New borns are fed new hatched brine shrimp, frozen brine shrimp and later crushed flakes until bigger.

Yeah, they're all dropping in the breeder. If I have a 20gal, with about 6 males and 14 females, heavily planted... should I just let nature take its course, then when I see the fry remove them?

I want to maximize caught baby fry.

Yeah everytime I ever used the breeder "trap", my momma's dropped and then died, and the fry were usually a tad too premature, so all of them died too, but now that I've got a 10 gallon heavily planted tank and let nature do its way, I have yet to lose a momma and have recovered fry that have not been eaten :]

I have oly had problem's with molllies in breeding trap's. The die 95%of the time on me in ther. I bought a heavily pregnant black molly today and put her in my quarentine/fry tank. She has almost no chances of aborting in there, or dieing. But it all dpepends
on the age/size/experince of the mother fish.
