Yeah, here's an idea:
Quit buying endangered species to breed when you don't already know everything there is to know about them. After that, I can only suggest that you start googling like mad until you dredge up all the info on this fish that you can. As it happens, this fish isn't too terribly difficult to spawn. If you go to Aquabid, one of the people selling them usually has an info page on them posted in their listing with lots of good info. Our own fish profiles section here at FF also has a bit on this fish. Look in the "profiles & articles discussion" section and you'll see it near the top. |

The reason that I purchased them was to breed them... You could mayby say something if i purchased 1 or 2, but I have intenstions to breed them and sell back to LFS. Its like the L46 Collected to the point of them being placed on the CITES lists, Now they are commonly breed and sold on. |

Aye, but yet here you are, asking the question you should have asked long before getting these fish.
Would you have bought a bunch of L46 if you didn't already know exactly how to breed them and thusly protect not only them, but your investment as well? Maybe I'm assuming too much. Maybe your extremely open-ended question of simply "any ideas?" led me to think that you had already made a huge mistake and had no idea of into just what you had gotten yourself. Maybe if you had rephrased your question to be a bit more specific, asking us which facets of Redline breeding we had any ideas about, I may have not simply assumed you were just another dummy doing more harm than good. My bad. Oh well; spilled milk. So then, ARE you an accomplished large barb breeder with a very large, well conditioned tank and easy access to top choice foods? If so, then that's wonderful; you're halfway home. Read the articles, do the research, and crank out some fish. Last edited by TheOldSalt; 01-17-2008 at 11:24 AM. |

Here's another little tidbit, I did my research BEFORE I got them, grew out a dozen of them, and had great conditions and STILL couldn't get them to spawn. Sometimes even with the best laid plans things don't work out as we'd like. So, good luck to you.

The main problem with denison barbs is that it has been suggested that the export of these fish is highly controlled due to the fear of competition in the trade - so that many that are sold are probably all males (with hopes that some females snuck thru) - try to find a breeder already established that might be willing to sell you bonafide females (still no guarantee here) and then work from the research you have found - and good luck to you! I have 7 that are now 5 inches and full bodied (got them at about an inch long) and judging from their colors, they are probably all males - I have had sewelia river loaches and now cherry barbs breed in this tank with 2 cardinal tetras that suddenly look plump so obviously my conditions seem ripe for reproduction of some kind... I have recently been interested in finding females myself. Let me know if you have any progress please
