About an hour ago, while watching some cherry shrimp climb along a vine of Amazon Swordtail, I noticed an itty bitty fishy hiding in a big leaf. It is a fry from either a powder blue mickey mouse platy or a marigold swordtail. All of my female livebearers are or have been pregnant and I have been traveling so I may have missed one giving birth. I only found this one so I am assuming that the rest didn't survive ore are really good at hiding.
I caught the fry in a net and placed it in a specimen container filled with tank water suspended in the tank. What should I do long-term? |

FISH ARE FREINDS NOT FOOD

you could let it go and see if it survives, but that depends on the tank mates
you could get a small tank as a growout tank for fry if you find more or you could get a breeder trap and leave it in that just remember to feed it/them regulary and it should be ok

I picked up a ten gallon tank while out shopping for fry food. Nine bucks, can't beat it. I'm going to run a little internal filter in my tank for about a week and then transfer it to the ten. Meanwhile I'm going to keep my little fry in a suspended container with some flow through unless there are other suggestions.
I suspect it is a marigold sword. I noticed that one of my females is a lot thinner looking and the male is aggressively "courting" her. More fry soon, I'm sure. |

I would keep them in a QT net in the tank for at least a week before putting them in a new tank. I planned on just growing out my fry in the QT net, except I have 12 now. LOL

I bought a big breeder trap and removed all of the dividers. This way my fry (I named him Nemo as he is the only one to survive from the litter and my nephew keeps asking, "Where's Nemo?") and I put some pieces with him. I also bought Hikari First Bites fry food.
I ordered a filter and heater for the ten gallon tank. They have not come yet. I will run the filter for at least a week in one of my established tanks and then set it up in the ten. Then Nemo gets to move to a bigger home. I have several pregnant platies and swords so I anticipate that I will be stocking the "grow tank" soon. |
