New to the fish world!
Hi,
My name is Spencer, I'm currently a student at The University of Maryland, college park. I just added fish to a hand-me-down cycled 10 gal tank. I just joined the forum to gain more knowlegde about aquariums in general.

questions
2 platies, a molly and a guppy.
I just have a few questions as well.
ok first of all when i carry out water changes with the tank, do i need to heat the water before i put it into the tank, and if so would you recommend purchasing a separate heater just for this purpose?
Is this 10 gal tank big enough to add a common pleco to?
and last of all, I boght the platies from petco, and i am now regretting it, I did have 3 platies but after about 9 days one of them developed a red spot on her belly and the next morning the spot had burst open and the fish was dead. I've read about fluke parasites but her gills seemed to be fine. I was just wondering if I should do anything to protect my other fish.
thanks
spencer

you're tank is too small for a "common" pleco, as they get quite large!
I'm not sure about kinds you could get, but I'm sure someone else can chime in on that... maybe a bristlenose?

Many local fish stores have a system in place for plecos.
You certainly can get a pleco for a small tank if you really enjoy them, so long as you know that they will get large. Check with your LFS first, but many of them have a system that allows you to purchase a small pleco and bring it back to them after it has grown to trade for another small one. The large plecos then end up going to homes with ponds.
