Default New Fish-man

Hello.

I've been reading the forums for a little while now and finally registered. I am a 26 year old male (27 once September hits) who just got into keeping fish. My girlfriend and I want to get 2 fish to keep together. I've read almost all the FAQ's and various other threads about starting out and feel like I have a decent grasp on the subject. I guess now the fun begins. More to come and hope to get to know all the people here better. This seems like a really nice community.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

Well, my girlfriend wants one of three fish, a Dalmation Lyretail Molly, a Goldfish, or a Sunburst Platy. I had my eye on a bala shark but found out that they can get pretty big. Sunbursts are said to get along with other small to medium fish. We have a 20g tank and I'm finally leaning towards 2 sunbursts and a few neon tetras. I do plan on starting a larger tank in the future so once the tank starts to get out of hand I could transfer them as needed.

I'm still in the process of starting the tank up and have some black gravel (very fine) as well as the tank (20g). I'd still need all the other equipment.

Do you think Neon Tetras can live easily with sunbursts? By "easily", I mean do they both share common living conditions, such as near ph levels, water type, etc. as this would make raising them much easier.

Honestly, I'd go for the goldfish.. They get pretty big, but they're WONDERFUL true pets. They'll recognize you and eat from your hand.. (My first ones did after only a week or so. The newer additions caught on quickly from the first ones.)

I'm not sure about the tetras and platies thing, but I'm pretty sure that most tropical fish (Characins excluded..) share roughly the same needs.. Tetras being characins, they have to be medicated differently and such.. I'm really not sure. -pushes the question to someone else-

A 20 gallon tank is best suited for the platys or mollys. Goldfish can grow larger than a bala shark so although they grow beautiful in color they will outgrow a 20 gallon.
