Welcome! I expect you have a few tricks up your sleve that you can share too. We also have some very anceint posters here many years older than you who've come back into fishkeeping from many years ago who are willing to share their experience. Welcome to the board.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers. |

Well, I guess I could just post here instead of a designated forum since you ask fish_doc...right now I have a 100 gal. set up with 4 healthy discus...that has been up and running for acouple of months now. plus afew corydoras, some black and white skirts, and a bluelobster that my son "donated" to me when he moved back east. Surprisingly "Louie" has not been a problem at all and I have watched him constantly. I also have a 35 gal. set up with malawi cichlids...two of which were also donated a blue jo and an electric blue. I added two yellow labs a very small plec, an electric blue female and a female auratus.. (sp. is probably wrong). I thought I had done my research on these but found out after the fact these little stripped pretty things can be very aggressive. Ah well, they all seem to co-habitate well together for the most part..however I feed them well lol I do hope to replace the 35 with a 55 for the sake of the fish but since I just bought this house AND the tanks (set them up on a shoestring) that may be awhile. However, I DO want to get a new filter system on the 100 and the things have certainly changed since I had my 125 yrs ago. I know nothing about wet/drys or cannister systems and just wish I could find what I had before!!! *sigh* sooooo the "old dogs can learn new tricks" applies, since I will hafta!

Welcome! Hope you stick around.
I used canisters and power filters back in the day. I used canisters on 55-75 gallon tanks, and custom wet drys on 125's. I too have recently gotten back into glass and water, and currently have 2 tanks. A 125 and a 20Long. I have an oversized power filter on the 20, a 400gph supreme. I have two Fluval 404's on my 125, and I periodically run a UV sterilizer on it for a few weeks every couple of months (overkill). I like the Fluvals, although I initially was going to go with Eheim. I found 2 Fluvals for cheaper than 1 Eheim canister. If you'd like to know more about the Fluval I'd be happy to go into more detail. C |

biowheels are good for smaller tanks too... I also like the look of hot magnums but haven't actually tried one myself yet...
Do you use RO water for those discus?

Well, on my small tank I have a whisper 30/60...Ive seen alot of ppl do use the bio-wheels but I dont know anything about them personally. No, Ive never used the RO water for my discus..Im sure lots of ppl would critizise me in how my tanks are set up at the moment...I have never tested my params, never owned a test kit, but have always had healthy fish just by keeping the tanks and filter pads cleaned. Ive flushed afew, and put some in the freezer instead of flushing them but Ive never had a fish just up and die either, so I must be doing something right huh?

I use whisper filters on all my smaller tanks. They are a great little filter as long as you dont overfeed your fish. Overfeeding causes the filter to need to be replaced quickly. But I have always had good luck with them.
As far as canister filters. I have a Magnum 350 on my 60 gal and it does a great job. The drawback is that it is not one of the eaiser ones to clean when it is needed. |
