Welcome to Fishforums. I'm sure you'll meet lots of people here who are in the same situation as you. One thing I hate about keeping fish is just wondering what to put in a new sparkling tank, I hope you make the right decision anyway. See you around!

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers. |

I love all cichlids, but some are easier to look after. Before I give you a whole list of different cichlids to try out, what cichlids do you actually like the look of? I can then tell you if it's a good idea for a noob to keep them or not, and what tank conditions they like, compatibility etc!
You can keep a lot of interesting cichlids in a 55g.

aight! Its a 55 us gallon, read my sig :P Well i would like some that dont grow to big maybe 10'' or less, it dont matter if they are messy and stuff, i'd like some that are active and have interesting personalities like an oscar ^_^ but just about any chiclids. i dont want to have lil guppys or mollies, etc, not that i dont like them, i'd just want some fun interesting fish. so anything you'd think is good i'll look into

If you want south american; I've had a severum, green terror, 3 angel fish, festivum, and a pleco all in a 65g.
I've also had these central americans sucessfully in a 55g: 3 pairs of firemouths, 2 pairs of convicts, 4 pairs of saji cichlids, and a pair of salvinis. If you want bigger fish, you could try some africans; I've had a pair of tilapia butterkoreri in a 75g. You could also go malawi if you want colourful fish, but you would need a lot more fish to prevent aggression.
