Default First time aquarists

Hi, we are a 24 year old couple and we just got our first 29gal freshwater aquarium for X-Mas. we have it on the appropriate stand and it is up and running, no fish, plants, substrate or anything like that. Has a 20-40 power pump, 100w flourescent tube plus 100w heater. We are very excited to turn this hobby into a passion. And we seem to have come to the right place for all our aquatic needs. Toby (our 20lb kitty) is also very excited, there isnt any fish in the tank yet, but he knows what it is for!!!

Hmmm... you used the word substrate instead of gravel. Are you sure you're new at this? LOL!
At any rate, yes, you've definitely come to the right place! Welcome to FishForums.

Welcome. I'm sure you'll make good fish keepers.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded:
Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.
