Smile Heyas - New to Fishforums

Lifelong aquarist here, but am returning to the fishkeeping hobby after a 7 year absence. Prior to that, I was a Fish Specialist for a PetCo in NJ, but am quite rusty. My boyfriend and I pooled our holiday gift $ and purchased a 90 gal. The biggest personal tank I ever maintained was a 55 gal whose main attractions were a 12yr old, 2 foot pleco (lochness) and his amiable 7yr old, 1 foot albino cousin (Ruby), so this is a special treat for the both of us. I am happy to see quite a few advances in the hobby and I am approaching the task eagerly but also cautiously as there are a few things I have never experienced. For example, along with the tank, we purchased 2 Rena Filstar xP3 canister filters which are still sitting in their boxes because I'm nervous lol. Any advice and help is greatly appreciated. Great site/forums, btw!

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded:
Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.

yeah he did lol (was actually about 20 inches but I was using the fish ruler when I said 2 foot) -- he would swim upside down to the surface and slowly eat frozen bloodworms from my fingers and allow me to gently run my finger along side his belly before he swam back down to his spirulina disks -- he started out at 4 inches in a 10 gal - was moved to a 30 gal then the 55 -- he moved 4 times and survived a marriage, a divorce, and 2 live in boyfriends in those 12 yrs but the final move to NY did not quite agree with them (the ammonia content out of the tap is ridiculous in the bronx) and sadly during a summer blackout I was away out of state and all 3 filters were shutdown...and when I returned.. well I held a lil funeral and couldnt bear to continue. But now my mourning period is over and I'm ready to pay tribute to them by setting up a 90 gal and once again sharing my life with these amazing animals. I do have pics of them both somewhere - I will need to dig em up (erm... the pics not the plecos)
