Hey there emc7! How are you doing? Did you hear the latest?.....................I am going to study to be a freshwater fish expert. A friend of mine is helping me with the process of becoming a freshwater expert. It is going to be a lot of hard work and studying hard, but it will be worth it.

No problem, take your time. I have monday and Tuesdays free, but have something in the evening 7-9:30.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. My schedule is kind of packed with work. I'll go check tonight and make sure they're all still alive. I usually work 12-8, so it sucks up most of my daytime, but I have Mondays and Tuesdays off if you want to arrange to meet halfway. I would take some Mbuna, but I don't have the tank space for them. Thanks for the offer anyways. =)

If I had that big of tank, I'd be tempted to, too. Bigger tanks give you more flexibility. All my tanks are 4' and under and all have only 2 or 3 species max, most have one. I just hate the concept. It seems created by stores to sell fish. Lets take anything that can live in pH 6-8, call it a community fish and tell people to keep them together at 7.0. Everyone's first tank is one of these and it creates more problems on top of the usual "cycling" issues. So you get people killing fish and dropping out of the hobby because their first tank didn't work.

lol, You must think I'm silly with my 135g and my choices of fish that I've had after that post about "pick a bunch of fish from all over the world and throw them in" community tank....lol

Use the advanced search to check old cycling threads. Check your pH, cycling takes much longer below 7. Try a lower ammonia level, closer to 2. 4 may be high enough to kill the bacteria you are trying to grow. Seed the tank with media from another tank if you know your tanks are disease-free.

What can I do to speed a cycling tank along? I have had it set up since Jan 10th..with a shrimp (fishless cycle) and monitoring the tank ammonia and other levels daily. It just won't produce nitrites....or nitrates. I cant think why it would take so long..my other tanks I started at the same time have long cycled. What can I do, or what am I doing wrong. I finally took out the decomposed shrimp two days ago and now I am adding pure ammonia to keep it at 4ppm. Thanks...you seem to know all the answers here on what to do..thanks in advance!
