It's surprising how many fish-keeping forums have been hacked over the years. Animal rights groups, maybe?

NOD32 from eset.com is seriously the best protection you can have on a home PC.

I did not get to see the defaced page, but I would strongly suspect that the attack was opportunistic somewhat political, and didn't have anything to do with FF being about keeping fish. Once a web application is found to be vulnerable, it's very easy, in general, for attackers to obtain a list of web sites that are running that software. Once they have the list, they systematically attack each one.

The page was just a pic of two people kissing, hosted on l22l.com

It also redirected viewers to another webpage, something about an online pharmacy company, but that page had been shut down by it's ISP.

I didn't have any antivirus software going, and I fiddled around with FF at the time so much that I must have been hit. I installed some AV software, but it hasn't been able to find anything.
I'm not having any weird behavior or performance issues. All I'm really worried about is someone getting ahold of sensitive information.

yay for being awsome not having a firewall on and somehow still not getting virused \o/.

that being said was talking with someone and they mentioned that some other sites on the same server got hit so likely FF wasn't the only target,, just we were easy prey.

I blame us being an easy target on not having a chat chat would have protected us.

hehe

You should seriously consider it. This is one of those situations where you're either part of the solution or part of the problem. Your system will get owned and you will probably not know it. Many nasty things can result, from simply using your computer to send spam, to being part of a bot herd that is used to extort money from companies, and even to hosting things like pirated music & software, and child pornography.

As to your comment on hacking back - first, I highly doubt you have that capability, second, the apparent source of the attack is almost certianly going to be some poor sap's computer who also didn't think it was important to have a/v & firewalls.

Even if I did not keep sensitive stuff on my PC, to me, it's not worth the risk of having my door kicked in and my house searched because I am accused of hosting warez, porn, or hacking someone else.

True I never thought of that. No I have a firewall and A/V it never got passed my firewall on this computer on the other Vista saw it or it virus program and killed it. I know how to hack computers. But you are right I never thought of like child pornography probly the worst one on that list.

I second TREASURECHEST's question. When, if ever, is chat coming back? What exactly is the problem with it and why has it become so difficult to fix?

Somebody has too much time on their hands, or they're being paid. I like Cascada though
