I just got a new black ghost knifefish, and I planned on putting him in my 55g, but as soon as I did, one of my cichlids (the smallest) began nipping him. After this went on for about 10 minutes, I decided to take the black ghost out and put him in my spare tank.
My question is, are there any ways I can get them to stop fighting? I want him to be with the other fish, but not if they are going to die. |

Nope, there's no way to get them to stop fighting really. Aside from that, a 55g isn't an appropriate home for a black ghost knife. They require a much bigger tank, as they get to be about 20" long and need swimming room and room to turn around in. 80-90g should be about the minimum.

what if i took out the troblesome cichlid, rearranged the tank, put the BGK in, then the cichlid back?
I mean, the cichlid would be too busy fighting for terriotory with the other cichlids, that he wouldn't care about the BGK. Right? (probably not) |

I wouldn't be optimistic about that curing the problem. However, the bigger issue, as Boxermom pointed out, is the size your black ghost knife will get. Even by itself, a 55 gallon wouldn't be large enough for a fish of that size. It's unfortunate, because they are cool fish, but they really do need a bigger tank.

the only way i see you housing them in the same tank is with a divider. Like those before me have mentioned, it will need a larger tank as it gets larger.

While I have heard that this type of cichlid is really aggressive I have never seen him mess with any of the other fish in the tank, and he was kept in a tank with other assorted cichlids in the store, none of which appeared hurt. |

Never judge a fish's peacefulness or lack of aggression by their behavior at the store. They've been shipped, are stressed, are in tanks that are overstocked with other fish, in an environment with a lot of human activity, etc. Their behavior can and usually does change once they get into a home of their own (theoretically) and start to relax and acclimate. Fish that were timid turn into bullies, fish that got along in the same tank at the store suddenly start having issues, etc.
