Picking up oddball fish.

I owned a fish store for a few years and recently closed it down. And now that I no longer have access to 15 page availablity lists from 8 different wholesalers, or the ability to walk into one of the largest wholesalers in the Southeast and hand pick my fish, I'm finding the selection from some of the stores around here a little slim. Any good online oddball vendors?

AP usually has people selling some good stuff and there are a ton of sponser sites:

The owner of AP, Chad, used to import from Peru, but i don't think he's started again since his heart attack...

He got some cool stuff in too.

rover what you looking for so we can help? im in the same boat as you, the town i live in has weak fish and i like harder to get fish so ive been checking on a few sources.

You can try browsing around aquabid. There's usually someone there selling what you're looking for, and there are easy-to-find categories. Try looking in their oddball sections and maybe you'll see something you like. But always research before buying if you're not 100% sure on its needs!

Also check waterwolves.com, they have over 10,000 members so you'll probably find something you like in the buy and sell section.

Places like fish2u, liveaquaria, etc. have some nice oddballs occasionally too.

Personal choice but I'd never buy from Fish2u.com. They sell horrifically dyed and painted fish.

I've been wanting to hunt down some "monster rock fish" though they sadly go by so many names i have no clue where to begin

Sorry, it's mean, but if someplace sells dyed fish I don't exclude them just for that one fact, I don't approve of it don't get me wrong though. The only company, etc. I really hate buying from is Tetra, they provide useless info to newbies and they're "special" on cbs, or whatever, really ticked me off. They placed about 20 fish..including 5 baby seahorses, in a 5 gallon tank. Sadly all the stores around here mainly sell their products.

They're calling it a stargazer, scientific name: Thalassophryne amazonica

Not real bad on price since i've never seen them for sale before.

Sorry to go off topic lol. Speking of aquabid, that's a ggreat place to check. Updating is slow but occasionally some rarity will pop up.

Oh yeah, also check out sharkaquarium.com, hopefully that's the right url, they have pages of oddballs, preds, etc.

Names seem to be very confusing for fish such as toadfish. They're usually called by dozens of different names or given names of other completely different fish.
A stargazer is actually a saltwater fish, similarly looking to that one on aquabid, but not exact.
Fishboy, are you refering to the freshwater (really brackish) stonefish/lionfish/toadfish and sometimes called waspfish, Batrachus trispinosus?

As I said, its my personal choice. I refuse to give a single penny to anyone who perpetuates the practice of dying fish. There's an LFS in Madison that I refuse to buy anything from. Their prices aren't bad, their fish tanks are very clean and nicely kept, fish look healthy, etc. However, they sell sweetheart parrots. I would never consider giving money to anyone who abuses a dog or perpetuates the abuse of a dog, so I can do no less when it comes to fish. They aren't lesser creatures in my eyes. Dying and mutilating fish is a horrific practice and one ethical aquarists should discourage by boycotting the people who sell them, IMO.
