So the LFS has killifish and they are really cool looking. They have one with a bent spine (looks kind of sad) but the guy says it doesn't seem to affect him. I was wondering what anyone can tell me about these. Do they have to be kept in their own tank (Newbie here, and "killifish" makes me think predator)? Or can I buy some and put them in my community tank? Thanks
Here's two pics. Sorry about the quality. They didn't want to hold still in the LFS tank. ![]() ![]() EDIT: So I read somewhere that they are "golden killies" but that "golden" just means they really don't know what kind they are. Also, that they are jumpers. Can I keep two in a ten gallon with no openings in the top?

*sigh Depends on what they really are. Most killifish do fine in a ten. But golden-eared or golden-wonder killies may kill each in a tank that size. They get like 5" and are mean to each other. I think they mostly eat insect larva in the wild (do great on bloodworms) but they will eat newborn fry that fit in the mouth. Try the AKA site http://www.aka.org/aka/modules/content/?id=2 and try to find out what they are.
Is this them? http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Minnows,...n%20Wonder.htm Last edited by emc7; 04-04-2008 at 03:25 PM. |

kind of. thats the shape of them. but they are not yellow or gold at all. they are a whitish-silver. not one spec of gold/yellow. i'm hoping to get rid of my danios in my 29 gallon, and my black skirts, and was wondering if i could do them in there. But if i can't, i would love to do them in the spare ten gallon on the bar. But again, if they can't, i won't get them. Just curious. They are really cool looking.

There are some gold killies from florida that are kind of like minnows in that the use the top of the water and people use them for bait. These are the mean ones. The fish pic I saw that looked most like your pics colorwise was a Medaka (Japanese killiefish or ricefish) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oryzias_latipes .
These fish look small in the pics. I'd bet they'd be ok in the 10 for awhile while you track down an ID. All killies jump. So seal every hole. |

Those aren't medakas, but Fundulus sp. killies. They're tough as nails, but mean as h#&!!

I didn't buy them, so I don't have to put them in a 10 gallon until I get an I.D. I'd love an I.D. BEFORE I buy them. And TOS, when I look up pictures of the fish you said they are, they don't look like that at all. Any reason?

Gee, could it be that there are a few dozen different species in that genus, and almost none of them are solid white like these?
