I was walking around at walmart, and saw that they had albino clawed frogs. Since being I am in a "temperary" residence, I can't use any large tanks. I am thinking about getting out a 10 or 12 gallon, and fixing a place for a couple of frogs. How many can I keep in a fairly small tank? Also, I assume they eat worms, but what else can I feed them?

are they the regular ones or the dwarf ones....if there the regular ones one can do fine in a ten gallon if they are males the females will get larger and i wouldnt say that a 10 gallon is enough...but its still better to have a 20 gallon or something like that....make sure that when u buy it it looks healthy

Definately not dwarfs. I see the dwarfs all the time. These were probably 2 inches or larger.

They aren't dwarves, they will get larger (4+ inches) and need a bigger tank than 10 gallons imo.

Yah, definately bigger than 10 gallons. I dont think I will be able to get them after all. The apartments I am living in barely let me bring my beardie, and I'm pretty sure they don't allow fish at all. I was kinda hopin I could house them in a 10 or 12 gallon till I moved back to galveston in january and move them to the 55 gallon I have acquired. . Again, I doubt that would work.

I had two in a 10 gal tank for years and they had plenty of room. They were both males though so Im sure that made a difference.

My wife's aunt has a 40G tank that is filled about half way with 4 or 5 regular sized African Clawed frogs. They are decent size at about 5-6 inches a piece and they just devour all the different worms that are fed to them. She has apparently kept them for several years and says they prefer to have a lot of room above the water level.

As long as you keep the water clean, you can keep quite a number of these little guys in a small space. However, you really have to stay on top of it, and I'm talking DAILY maintenance. Like most other frogs, they breathe through their skin and rapidly absorb stuff from it. If you let the water build up any ammonia or whatever, you'll have very sick frogs in a hurry. Many other frogs are very much more sensitive than these guys, though; you can't keep a dozen Acris or Pseudacris in a gallon jar for more than a few hours, for example. Xenopus, though.. I've seen some pretty amazing concentrations doing okay. while I don't really recommend it, 4 frogs in a 10-gallon tank should be ok indefinitely with diligent waterchanges, and maybe even 6 if you really work at it.
This frog used to very commonly be used for human pregnancy testing, and you'd see them kept in labs and clinics all the time under conditions that you'd never want to provide as a pet owner. Last edited by TheOldSalt; 10-14-2008 at 08:20 AM. |

and you have to be very, very careful about where you place the tank. Anything that could possibly settle on top of the water, ie: air freshners, etc. can kill african frogs rather quicky
