Just wondering if anyone else has an arrowana whether it be silver, black, or even an Asian...although I know the true Asians are supposed to be illegal to import to the U.S. I just wondered if anyone else had one and could maybe tell me exactly how quickly he will grow?? I know he has potential to reach 4 or 5 feet approximately. And I am prepared for this growth, he is only about 5 or 6 inches right now, pretty tiny, but growing quickly! Just hoping anyone could give me advice on this soon to be giant sweetheart! Thanks hehe

One quick note about Asian Arowanas. They are being bred for the pet trade in Asia under CITES regulations. Each fish is fitted with a microchip and registered prior to its first sale. You can check out one of the CITES registered breeders at http://www.dragonfish.com/.

Very little is exact with growing fish.
The warmer the water, the higher the oxygen level, the cleaner the water, the lower the amount of GIH ( growth inhibitor hormone ) in the water, and the more food it eats, the faster the fish will grow. Sounds simple, right? LOL! Fish under excellent care grow faster. Anyway, I've seen silvers reach a foot in their first year under even ordinary conditions, starting at 4 inches at time of purchase. |

Wow thats pretty fast I guess hehe But he has gotten pretty big pretty quick. He was only about 3 inches when I got him, now he's six and that was on May 9th, so he's literally doubled in size so far. Which is awesome! I do keep him in R.O. water and keep it quite clean, so if good water and good eats means he'll grow faster then I'd say he'll be at a foot within the year
Thanks guys for all the help! |

Australian arowanas are a protected species, no wonder look at the size of their mouths!LOL. They are WELL armed.
My dream is to see one in the flesh........only fillets though, I can't STAND them fine bones!LOL.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers. |
