None. Silvers (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) are the cheapest and most common. Price will also depend on how you get them, either through your LFS or online/shipped.

I'm partial to the jardini (Scleropages jardini), going to be the fourth and last fish I introduce to my tank.
A helpfullink I found in my research, written by David Haltinner of AquaWorldMagazine.

I haven't ever found ANY but the silver where I live and definitely nothing cheap besides the silver. Everyone says the black ones are easy to come by but never have I seen even one around here, not even in a show tank not for sale, so I got a silver because it was the only one I could find! And I am glad, its a really great fish now that he's gotten used to me! At first he was a bit of a nutcase and spazzed out all the time, but he's alright now. And I say He but have no idea, does anyone know how to sex them??? thats one thing I am totally unsure of regarding an arrowana?? Help if anyone can? Thanks!

I can't find any black ones where I live, maybe go on aquabid.com and see if they have any. I know they have Asians but very very very expensive! But awesome looking fish! Although I think the last time I looked there were no blacks on there for sale either. So many ppl say they are easy to come by, but heck I've never seen one.

I found some vague descriptions on sexing Aro's:
"There may be differences in body depth."
"The only sure time for determining the sex of the arowanas is when a pair is formed and starts to breed - the arowana is a mouthbrooder that spawns and raises its young in pairs. A mature fish is at least 3-4 years old and usually a pair is formed out of a group of fishes raised together."

I've heard that blacks are harder to find because of the demand.

Well then maybe I won't get the pleasure of knowing hehe, I don't think I want two of these big guys To be honest I was told they would be about 2 or 3 feet at best, but I have lately read they can reach up to 5 + feet, and mine is growing so fast its obvious they get way bigger than what I was told. So now I am having to plan on 250 gals or more for the new tank instead of a 125...which is cool, but I don't think I want two fish that size Although after watching that video you posted with all those cute lil babies I sooo would love to have those! hehe But that person also had a pool pretty much for theirs..and I don't know if I could have that, although I sure wish.

The average sizes of the 6 main arowanas:

South Americans, the silver and blacks, will mature to 48" + (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum -silver, Osteoglossum ferreirai - black).

Asians, will mature to 36" + (Scleropages formosus).

Australians will mature to 36" + (Scleropages jardini, Scleropages leichardti -spotted).

Africans, will also mature to 36" + (Heterotis niloticus).

a im a little late on this post but 2 aros in the same tank will end up with one ded 90% of the time if u want more than 1 u need 5+ . a 125 is a good size for a small aro 0-12in but it will need a 6x2x2 or 180g tank for a single aro ( bigger is better). as u sed your aro is growing crazy quick it is normal to grow up to 1in a month some times even 2in but that all depends on water quality tank size an food(only last for a year or so then they slow down). babby black (3-4)in in vegas is 125-200$ .

Droop eye in silvers, most likely due to genetic predisposition, from mass breeding in captivity and inbreeding. Not a fact, just a theory.

More info here, aquaticpredators.com.

Default Dilema

If anyone lives near Lexington Kentucky and wants my silver arrowana I am willing to give him to a good home. My brother-in-law passed away at age 30 very suddenly and unexpected this past Saturday. We are now having to move into a bigger house because we are inheriting a 120lb pitbull/mastiff..great dog by the way. But we have 2 tanks of discus and 2 cats and honestly I am gonna have to sacrifice the arrowana due to tank size/expense. He is in a 55 gal right now but he's only 5 or 6 inches. So since now I have a huge dog to care for the arrowana is going to be out of the question considering the new tank I am gonna have to purchase to house him. I am going to try to get one of the LFS here to take him so its easier but if anyone is interested or close to me to come get him let me know please. Thanks a lot! I really love this little guy and want to make sure he gets a good home!

I'm sorry for your loss. I'll light a candle and say a prayer for your family this weekend.

Would you be willing to ship the aro? I've got a jard on the way so I can't, but I could ask around for you.

Yes I would be willing to ship him if someone really wants him and the LFS won't take him, I haven't asked so I'll know by tomorrow what they say. But if they say no I will absolutely be happy to ship him if someone is willing to care for him, I just want him to be happy and taken care of, he's a great fish. I might have to ask you again how to ship, you already told me once when I inquired about moving, but now its a totally different circumstance and I've never shipped anything before but would be willing.

And thank you very much I appreciate your care and concern, thats very nice of you.

Here is where I explained my reasonings for needing to rid of my arrowana by the way. I know you aren't too far from Lexington and if I have trouble getting Just fish or another LFS to take. He's only about 5 or 6 inches right now.

you can PM me your contact info, and i can direct people to you, if you're selling it name the price. if you're giving it away, i'll let peoples know - free silver, customer pays for shipping. Paypal would probably be the best means of receiving money.

I've never shipped a fish, you could start a new thread to get some help on that, i'm curious to know the best/exact way to do so.
From what I do know is:
Don't feed fish a couple of days prior to shipping.
Large bag 1/3 full of water
Guessing: put in box with lots of bubble packing?
Label box LIVE FISH
Go to ____ to check on next day air fees, probably need 1/ weight of package 2/ size 3/ to and fro addresses etc.

Eurasian email me at Ashleyrs73@yahoo.com I'll give you my addy/phone number that way. And I will be happy to give him to someone free, especially if they are willing to pay for shipping. We have ebay but don't usually use paypal, mostly cashiers check/money order etc. But I'll be glad to work anything out if someone really wants him. Thanks again for all your help!
