Agreed. You should start with golden wonders. Easy to raise and breed. Suitable for community tanks also.

Most Killies are mean, nasty, pugnacious and vicious little beasties, but we forgive them for their colors. Killies are best kept alone for the most part, although a very few can be fine community fish.

Actually, a number of killies are quite suitable for various types of community tanks. The problem with killies is that they are so diverse that any general statement about them is bound to be 80% false.

I have kept a number of species of Epiplatys, fundulopanchax, pachypanchax, aplocheilus, and lampeyes in community tanks. If you go to the American Killifish Association site (www.aka.org), you can get a copy of the Killifish Beginner's Manual which should get you started.

If you are anywhere near the Washington, DC area, you might want to attend the AKA National Convention.

Not really, but a few species can be kept in variable conditions. __________________ If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.
