Hey guys,
I have had a clown knife for around half a year now and she (well, I've been calling her "her", but I'm not sure) has developed her spots and she's taking on an adult knife shape. I was hoping now that she's bigger I'd be able to determine "her" true gender. Does anyone have any pointers for what to look for on these beautiful fish that would signify their sex? I will post whatever new pictures I can get of her in a little while.

Sounds good, what size is it? Anything like that is difficult to sex.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers. |

she's in a 60G right now with a bunch of other beings that aren't supposed to be kept together. everyone that hears what i have in this are always lecturing me about how i need to separate them. i've had them all since they very very young (if not since they hatched) and if there were any problems, i separated them. the only problem i've had was between 2 killifish that were given to me because they were too aggressive for my neighbor's tank.
about her size, just guessing, i'd say she's probably 5 or 6 inches now. the arch on her back is what i'm most amazed with right now. she's really bulked up (i assume since she's finally eating things whole) and the arch is more dramatic now; she looks more like an adult.

I think the only way to sex a clown knife is by venting for a positive id, seems I've also been told that females are plumper than males, however that being said I'm not all that familiar with them and have never had the need to research them for myself.

okay.... you remember clown knives get more than 3 feet long right?
Those fish definitely shouldn't be kept together escpecially a gar. I guess I lectured but dang.....lol As far as I know you can't sex a clown knife. I think i've heard of one way but it was really confusing. There is a site allthingsknife.com i think it's called. |

I don't believe she has a gar with her clown knife. But yes they do get up to 40 inches +.

I hope she doesn't. It depends on the species but they can go anywhere from 22 inches (shortnose gars) to 10 feet (alligator gars).
Im hoping she has a hijueta (rocket gar, or a needlenose fish than a gar. It's still bad but they don't get nearly that big. |

You're forgiven, no-one can even fit that many fish I mentioned into a 30g tank let alone keep them, oh well, at least someone cleared that one up.
