hey i have a fire eal i just added him ( pic attached) what do i feed him

also he seems to hide all the time

dose he become active once in a while if not ill return him
( no use in keeping a fish you cant see right?)

anyway i would really appreciate it if you would give me your opinon in this fish

Hey dude.

thats not a fire eel, looks to me like a zig zag. This is good since fire eels get very large while zig zags stay relatively small, should be fine in a 20 gallon.

Spiny eels are naturally nocturnal fish, they come out at night. Since spiny eels are not massively bred in fish farms like many other aquarium fish, they are wild caught. This means yours may or may not of had an owner before you, and may not be weened onto foods youre able to feed it. as they grow older, they will burrow much less, and adapt to your feeding schedule. they'll come out when youre ready to feed them, and be much less shy. as for feeding, wormy foods will be taken most readily. If it's squirming it will do even better. How large is your eel? I'd first try diced earthworms. other foods like frozen bloodworms, whiteworms, glassworms, mosquito larvae, even grindal worms will work. other foods like mysis shrimp, brineshrimp will also work. try to vary it. but, dont expect your eel to accept prepared foods such as freed dried, pellet or flake foods. it will starve. if you are not ready to be able to feed this fish, I'd take it back. intially weening them from natural foods can be a pain. that is if they havent been in the aquarium trade for a while, bigger eels are better to start with.

I have a Tire Track and i feed him live ghost shrimp and live guppies once a week and he has been doin fine for about a year now.

they are noctornal and usually only come out at night but he is a great addition to my tank. I think that they are very cool and unusual fish.

with most of my fish every now and then ill go get worms from backyard or fishing bait and throu them in ther ei have a freshwater moray and hes doings great...im gonna sell him off thou he just eats and i can nvr enjoy him

A friend had a tire track eel that was about 12"-14" in length. One of the coolest fish (eel) that I have ever seen. The only thing he ate was goldy feeders and we did get him to eat shrimp pellets. As far as any plants, forgetaboutit. These things burrow and screw up every deco arrangement you can come up with. super neat fish, good luck. The coolest thing is you can train them to eat out of your hand.

Just out of curiosity, why would you buy a fish you........
1. Don't knwo what it is?
2. Haven't done the research on its feeding habits, and care for?

have a freshwater moray and hes doings great...

there is no such thing as a freshwater moray... they put the freshwater in front of it to fool people into buying it for their freshwater tank and then it dies a six months to a year later of unknown causes. Morays are definately sw or at the very least, brackish.

ok, the supposed freshwater snowflake moray eel is BRACKISH not freshwater. They can inhabit all water levels but really don't do good in freshwater for long periods of time. THey go into saltwater to breed, and that's only a somewhat short period. So it's going to have to be kept in a 90 gal min tank that's brackish and maybe a high sg change here and there (during winter?) but not a huge change at once...slowly lol.

Second of all the "eel" (spiny eels aren't actually eels) needs a bigger tank than 20 or 30 gallons (whatever mentioned) a 50 or bigger is a much better choice. ^0 gallon long really seems to make them feel comfortable.

Plants can sometimes be kept with them, ive seen them personally kept in highly planted tanks, from what i've seen they kind of ignore plants and stay in open areas of sand. Yours may dig them up but ya never know.

Fishfirst is right about the moray eels.


They should outgrow their burrowing with adequate cover and caves, and as they get larger. My tire track and pea**** rarely burrow, I have plants with both without problems.


Goldfish arent very good feeders for anything. Worms will be your best bet.
