They should not be kept with fin nippers as they have long finnage. Smaller fish under 2 inches are also out of the question as they may end as a snack for the butterfly fish. Bottom dwellers and mid water fish of a good size and temprement are what you should look for.

Butterfly fish do well with peaceful softwater fish of a similar size or larger.
When I kept them, they like playing with hatchet fish of a similar size, if smaller they might eat them.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded:
Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.

I kept mine with gouramis and th would go near the butterfly fish but them she woud move them away. I also had a floating plastic plant for it to go into and hide if it wanted to. I never had any fin lose but the potential is there. My tetras didn't bother it either.

I know you didn't ask, but please be sure to cover your tank, I do believe these fish are jumpers.

I wouldn't suggest putting it in your 10g. b/c they need atleast a 30g. The more surface area the better.
