Hi all, new member and all but this little fella deserves some love.
He is a pigeon blood, got delivered with a severe mouth deformity and I should have culled him out of fear that he would struggle to eat with all his tank mates but I couldn't. I rooted for him, and now he is bossing all but 1 discus about (and 4 are twice his size). Has to take a funny angle when eating which makes us laugh and even Mr (the major Mr from the tank busting pair) can't budge him when it comes to feeding. Tell me you don't just love him. ![]() ![]() And yes, he is named after Peter Beardsley (not admiration, I'm a Sunderland supporter!) |

He certainly looks like he's going to live, as long as he doesn't forget that he needs to approach the food sideways to get at it

Breed him if your lucky its genetic. It seems there is a market for deformed fish ("fancy" goldfish, blood-parrots, etc.)

I have a zebra danio with his head literally completely sideways (think 90 degree turn). That little guy does one heck of a job bossing the tank around too! He will go in with the big fish soon, while the 4 normal ones will go to the LFS for credit.
Your guy is very lovable. Can't say as I would encourage breeding, but I do believe in letting them live

aye thats the thing, despite my early fears and thinking I should just put him out of his misery, I really wanted him to survive. Tried netting and gently massaging thinking it might just be a dislocation (this has worked with some of my angels) but no joy. I kind of took to him in an 'underdog' way and now he seems to be doing great.
Was obviously disappointing to receive in terms of the breeder but when raised he has promised a free discus next time doing a delivery so really can't complain in that respect. Now I just enjoy watching him feed (and I still laugh every time). Certainly don't think its genetic as the breeder has an excellent reputation for quality and standards who I've used before (not sure if I'm allowed to name) and he was part of a delivery with brothers/sisters who are fine in every way. Whether or not I eventually let him breed comes down to if he wants to pair off but if it appeared to be genetic I certainly wouldn't allow breeding to continue. Hybrids are fine in my opinion but I would never promote genetic issues in a Discus purely because the generations of tank breeding (and often in-breeding) has already left them weaker in many respects in my opinion. I'm not sure if I was kidding or not. I don't want to encourage deformed strains of fish, but when I see how much $ people get for "flowerhorns" I get sort of greedy.

so wait...are you talking about hybrids here emc? or deformities? because...that is two different subjects...
this fish is a deformed fish, and if it is indeed genetic, it should not be bred. hybrids are a whole different story... |
