they're fairly easy to keep, i picked some up a month ago and they are all thriving and growing.

i don't think they're very easy to breed. mine keep doing the spawning dance, rubbing upside down on leaves, but i can't find any eggs yet. you need soft water with low pH to breed them.

By first fish, you mean first in the tank, make sure you seed your tank with filter media from your other tanks to spread bacteria over.

Every fish needs bacteria. Bacteria=cycled tank, meaning that you have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrItes, and some nitrAtes....usually more than 5ppm. Harlies are pretty hardy, but I don't think I'd use them to cycle a tank. If the tank is already cycled, then they should be fine as the first to go in.

I think you posted in the wrong section.......in the future please post threads like this in General FW.

The only reason our tanks don't become vats of toxic ooze that kill our fish is because a bacterial process going on within the tank.

Laymans terms
Fish waste = Ammonia -> Bacter eats this there waste =Nitrite -> Different Bactera eat Nitrite and their waste = Nitrate. You remove Nitrate with water changes.

Please do a lot more reseach before investing in any other fish, this concept is one of the most important concepts to understand in the hobby.

Smile Harlequin Rasboras

I have 12 Harlequins and they live very happily with my male and female Zebra Danios. They're a lovely peaceful fish, very active and also very cute.
