Otocinclus (Otocinclus affinis)[/SIZE]
DISTRIBUTION- Southeastern Brazil HABITAT- Running waters of Brazil SIZE-- Usually 1 to 2 inches TANK SIZE- 20 Gallons(Prefer Company) DIET- Algae eater. Needs Staple diet and loves cucumber and zuchinni TANK ZONE- All over. Mainly on walls or plants TEMPERAMENT- Peaceful fish that does well in community tanks CHEMISTRY 2-15 dGH 70-80 Degrees Fahrenheit PHOTOPERIOD- Daylight SEASONAL CHANGES CRITICAL?- Not critical SENSITIVITIES- Sometimes very fragile when first purchase HARDINESS & LIFESPAN- Fragile in beginning but get to be quite hardy. Lives 3-5 years PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION- Small fish that has splotchy markings along its side. SEXES-- Females have rounder bodies and larger. ACTIVITY PEAK- diurnal HABITS- Fun to watch. Work for about thirty minutes then take a break. They eat the algae of leaves starting from the top then moving down. Same with walls. Seem to group together if you have 3+. SPAWNING NOTES-- Tough to breed. Lower water level and increase temp. Courtship with the T formation. OTHER NOTES- A very nice fish that is great for aquariums that can't house a pleco. Fun to watch and add some life to your tank. There are many subspecies of otocinclus. ![]()

You should also mention that there are MANY subspecies of otos. They are very hard to tell apart. And one oto in a 10 gallon isn't a good idea as they perfer company. 20 gallons is the minimum recommended tank for them.

they also have many different types of markings, but the most common is a black stripe

Those are not O. affinis. Those are the more common O. vittatus.

They eat algae the same as affinis. Just different coloration. These 2 species are the most common imported into the states. Very few accounts of breeding either. I believe the only detailed account is from a French breeder. Most other cases are by accident. There are approx 20 more identified species of Otos. Very few are found in the U.S. in any quantity. All are wild caught.

my oto is rare i think it can morph from vertical to horizontal stripes depending on its mood and he does push ups
