There is no way we can teach the basics of reefkeeping. That would require several books. Your best bet is to hit the internet and read for a cpl of weeks. Then get a good book and read it a cpl of times. There is no set way to run a reef. A lot depends on the inhabitants in it and there are thousands of choices.

lol too little info for me to even start. I would get the book "the conscientious marine aquarist" by bob fenner and go from there What species did you want to have? What is your budget? how big of a tank are you planning?

I second the suggestion to get Bob Fenner's "The Constientious Marine Aquarist." Awesome book, TONS of great information. Wet Web Media (www.wetwebmedia.com) has a huge database of tons of articles and FAQs. I'm sure you can find tons of info there.

One Word: Croutons.

IMHO, having some experience with general saltwater tank maintenance helps out greatly if you haven't already.
Personally I don't have full blown reef systems..yet, i've just started getting into corals lmao. If I started like that right of the bat I would of killed everything, but since I already had some experience with saltwater, all I had to do was set it in there and they turned out okay (you know what I mean...hopefully). Another word of advice, well two, do as much research as you can, and secondly..don't start off by joining a fully reef orientated forum right away. Most places will help, but i've learned a few others get quite competitive and argue more than help :P. Try reading they're articles though..some pretty good info usually. The big discussions are also informative..sometimes lol.

A few tips as you think about your setup
don't skimp on equipment, you'll end up buying replacements get a good skimmer (such as a corallife super skimmer, or ASM, Aqua C) go all out on lighting (you'll end up upgrading sooner or later) Get metal halide, or VHO around 5-8 watts per gallon

Start at $1,000.00. Then think about buying inhabitants for the tank.

Here's an Idea of ...........
Liverock & baserock (30/70 ratio) 100lbs $450.00 (You wont need this much in a 50 but expect to pay ~4.00 a pound. Skimmer $125.00 on sale (Normally $170.00) Sump/Overflow $130.00 Lighting expect to spend ~$350.00 here R.O. Unit Must have for reef tanks ~200.00 Thats not including livesand, powerheads for water movement, Heaters, plants for sump, and whatnot. We havent begun to stock the tank yet either. I (we) don't want to discourage anyone from a reef tank. I got hooked listen to Marty, Reefneck, Fishfirst, T.O.S. and others here. Just want you to be aware of the initial cost to undertake a project such as a reef tank. You can always start with fish only or FOWLR and upgrade later. My tank right now has been cycled for ~2 months. It has a cleaning crew in it and 4 very small frags. Its a very slow process.
