Right now I am using "two little fishies, marine snow" twice a week. I am putting a little piece of food in my mushroom's mouth. I am also occasionaly putting shrimp pellets in the bubble and torch corals (lfs's orders).
Is it ok to feed the corals with dry food like that? Am i feeding them enough?

I don't like "Shrimp Pellets" for Corals. I feed mine small peices of silversides.
I also feed DT's Oyster Eggs 3 times a week and see a huge reaction from the corals when I do. They love the Oyster Eggs.

I'm talking about "Silversides"! The frozen food (fish) you buy to feed.

i like to feed mine brine, when ever i defrost a cube, i just take a turkey baster and suck a bunch up, and gently squirt some into what ever i feel like feeding at the time.

Brine Shrimp has NO nutritional value whatsoever. I don't feed it to anything.

ive heard garlic a few times now. What does it do? How much do you use?
Im using cyclopeeze, formula 1 and 2 pellets, finishing the rest of my brine, marine cuisine, mysis, and now ocean nutrition dried sea weed I just kind of feed the tank, though I have bought a turkey baster lately for feeding the corals. I do the cyclopeeze about once a week, but have only been feeding the tank. Should I try getting some shrimp or something from the store? sorry about jacking the thread, I just thought this could help everyone. |

Cyclopeeze is good nutririon-wise which is why i would feed more than just once a week. You dont need to supplement with shrimp because cyclopeeze has everything neccessary for health and coloration.
The purpose of feeding garlic is because suposedly it helps keep fish from acquiring parasites and boosts fish's color. To feed all you do it chop it up as finely as you can and toss it in the same time you feed your other foods. I personally like to put the garlic just before i put in the food, so the fish get to recognize the scent and come out for feeding time. Of course my assumption that the fish recognize the scent is purely based on nothing, but there is no doubt that when the garlic goes in the water there is recognition that its time to eat.

Way! The LFS will tell you anything to make a sale! ZERO percent nutritional value in Brine. Mysis is much better and about the same price. If you need a smaller food for rasing fry (Like Clowns) then you would find/get Rotifers! You can buy Rotifers in the refrigerated section of most good LFS stores under the name Roti Feast. Same people that put out Tigger Pods. (Reed Mariculture).

I loooove mysis shrimp, and I've been mixing that up with some frozen BBS for my smaller fishes and corals. The marine snow I've heard good things about... but I've heard the best things about DT's Phyto. Coarse I don't dose either so I wouldn't know. I rely on my lighting to get most of my growth.

Can corals live on lighting alone or do they need to be supplemented with some kind of real "food"?

I had a red and green mushroom that survived not thrived under solely lighting and organisms from my live rock, but the tank conditions have to be spot on.

I guess to put it in a simple way for you : brine shrimp is kinda like candy for fish. Don't have nutritional value. LOL !!! |

To be a bit more precise, brineshrimp use up most of their nutritional value in the process of growing during their first day after hatching. Very newly hatched ones are still good for something, but admittedly very impractical to use.
At the farm we used them all the time, but these were first gutloaded on microalgae, which once again made them at least a bit more useful. We normally just used decapsulaed eggs whenever possible. Decapsulated eggs, you see, still have all their nutritive value, and are handy for feeding to coral and fish. Uneaten ones will of course hatch in several hours, filling the tank with motile food aplenty. "Artemia Revolution" is one good brand of such decapsulated eggs in a bottle ready for use. Expensive, though. If you can get a good supply of ordinary cysts and decapsulate them yourself, then you'll have a good thing going. You should of course still supplement with as wide a variety of other things as possible, as brineshrimp aren't as good as many other things. Oyster trochop****************s, rotifers, mysis.. there are many things much better than brine to use, even if they're not as convenient. |
