Default another beginner question

I am going to start setting up a 40g reef tank within the next month. One thing I'm really confused about is filtration. The tank I'm going to use is freshwater right now, with two hob filters - one aquaclear, one marineland. Should I use these filters? I've heard people suggest not using a filter and only a powerhead. Or should I get a canister?

Also, are there any websites that have different stocking suggestions/options for tanks? It's very confusing trying to figure out what fish and reef components are compatible.

thanks

the thing to do is read. read all you can.

and for your filtering situation, id say use just live rock, live sand, and a protein skimmer

The thing about reeftanks is that you don't want to create nitrate faster than your liverock can get rid of it. That's why we tend to avoid the kinds of filters which make a lot of nitrate, such as the ones you mentioned. You can still use them as purely mechanical filters, but you would have to clean them twice a week for that.
