Okay this is a run down of what I got from the frag swap the yesturday/ Pulsing Xenia, Red Mushrooms, Green Mushrooms, Neon Green Zoanthids, 2 trumpets, and some snails... BUT the only thing that seems to be opening are the mushrooms and pulsing xenia... I'm wondering if I can coax the zoanthids and trumpets with placing them in more flow or less flow or up higher in the water column. I'm quite new at this coral thing, but I acclimated over 3 hours for each frag. The tank is a little cloudy from adding some live sand three days ago... is this a factor in them opening or not? Should I stop the powerheads flow so that the sand can settle faster or keep them on so the sand doesn't smother the corals?

Leave them running. There is no reliable way of knowing if the sand is bothering them since you have no way of really knowing what the conditions were like in their original tanks.
Corals pretty much acclimate themselves in about the same way anemones do. They'll open up when they feel like it. The outer layer of cells is of course at the mercy of the new conditions, but the inner layers they can protect to an extent as they see fit. One factor to consider is what the conditions were like in their original tank. If the difference is very great in your tank, they'll take a bit longer to adjust to changes in light intensity and water flow. If you don't know what they're used to, you can try moving them around a bit or just leave them alone to adjust to things. A big change in lighting sometimes results in a color change, so that can be a clue once they finally do open. I guess what I'm saying is that trying to coax them into opening is a waste of time unless you really think that something is very wrong with the place they are currently positioned. You might get them to open a bit quicker, but they should open wherever they are anyway eventually. Oh, another thing-- the 3 hour acclimation bit isn't really worth the bother. Yes, corals are supposed to be super sensitive and such, but the truth is that they're really pretty tough and resilient. As you work with them more and more you'll find that their ability to adapt quickly to rapid small changes is pretty remarkable. That's no reason to get careless, of course, but you don't need to make yourself sick with worry. The stress of attending the frag swap was worse on them than moving from tank-to-tank would be. |

I picked up some zoo's too, and had same thing with two frags still closed from yesterday, figured give it time, my xenia took awhile to begin full standing and pulsing... You going to the BBQ at end of month? they are having a raffle i believe or something...

the xenia was pulsing in the bag when I got it... ummm don't believe I'm going to the bbq, just too much to do... if work and other stuff doesn't get in the way, then maybe I'll show... its just such a long drive.
