Disease Question

I plan on setting up a reef tank w/ live rock, live sand, sessile invertebrates and shrimp or crabs. Will I have to worry about any diseases entering the tank that I would not be able to safely treat?

Yes, indeed you will... at least if you don't quarentine fish before introduction, and treat them with a combination of fw dips, parasite treatment, and possibly a bacterial/fungal medication. Corals, inverts, and liverock should also be quarentined with adequite lighting but not in the same system as the fish because of the medications used. I try to quarentine everything I get.

If I don't plan on adding any fish to the tank, would I still have to quarantine live rock and have to worry about diseases?

Coral diseases, yes. Things like Blackband disease, for example, or infections which cause RTN ( rapid tissue necrosis ).

However, the odds of getting either of these from just your live rock aren't very great. Either quarantine the rock separately or just let the tank run without fish or corals for several weeks to be on the safe side.
