Default My new buy!!!

I just ordered some coral for my 29 gallon. They will be my first coral I have ever kept, besides my florida condi anemone. I was wondering if I could touch the coral when I place them into my tank or do I need tongs of some kind. The corals are 1 Hammer, 1 Candy, 1 Green Candy, 1 Green Hairy Mushroom, 1 Spiny Cup Pectinia. It is a stupid question, but I don't want to harm the coral.

Thanks

I would say if you have allergies, Don't touch. Use gloves. Like me with no allergies, No Worries. I have handled everything from GSP to Carpet anemones with no problems but some people can have serious reactions to anything so be careful.

Default Starting 1st Reef

I am starting my first reef tank. It is a 29 gallon tank and I ordered a few corals. I was wondering if anyone has frags or corals that you don't want. I am located in El Segundo, CA.(90245) I am willing to pay for shipping and/or pick up. Please give me the stuff you don't want. I have dreamed of having a nice reef tank for a long time.

Thank You,
Randy Gerber

Randy, Congratulations on your first reef tank. I hope you are ready for a challenge because a small reef is harder to maintain but not impossible. I started in a 29G myself but had many years of freshwater experience before that. You first stated that you had just "ordered" corals. (And by the way, Your Condi Anemone is not a coral). Now you are asking for corals?

What kind of lighting do you have? I would be happy to give away a few frags but you do know that Corals are live animals and would have to be shipped Overnight and that runs around $30-$35 just for the shipping.

I think we need alot more info about your tank and you should research more of what can be kept with the equipment you have.

Just trying to help.

thanks. I have a ten gallon sump, 150 sump filter, 100 Seaclone skimmer, a powerhead, airstone, 24" ORBIT COMPACT light. I currently have 20 lbs. live rock and 25 lbs live sand, 2 orange firefish, 1 yellow clown goby, 1 true perc. My clean-up crew is weak now: 2 turbo snails, 5 red hermits,1 cleaner shrimp, 1 peppermint shrimp, and 1 sand sifting star. Any inverts would help too. I appreciate all the help and sorry if I seem like a charity case.

Thank You All

Yes corals really need to be shipped overnight right now. Summertime they can easily get by with 2-3day mail. How many watts is the lighting?

Those lights are commonly 130W. Not enough to keep alot of Corals other than softies like Mushrooms or Xenia and a few Low Light LPS species.

Definately not good for an Anemone. Not a bad light for such a small tank but the tank is pretty tall and the PC lights don't penetrate as deep as other types. Also 65W of that is probably actinics cutting down even more on your daylight to 65W.

Ah yea 130w Lighting is what i have over my 29g currently, am in middle of upgrading the lighting to 175w MH I really like 14k

Reefneck is right, the lighting will only be sufficient for LPS and softie corals, having a 65w 10k and 65w 03 atnic, the blue is really dominant in the coloration.

You do know that peppermint shrimp eat anemones stinging or non. I didnt find that out till I put a pink tip in and my 3 peppermints came chowing down on it.

good point, however, individual shrimp behavior and diet differ. And sand sifting starfish often starve in small tanks as well, eating sand bed organisms til its lifeless.

How long have you had the firefish? They usually don't do well together unless they pair up, which is quite difficult.
