Default algae

i was just at the lfs, talking to the fella about my sump configuration, he was saying that putting a light over my sump to keep the macro algae, is just going to cause problems with other algae, does this have any truth to it? or is he full of it? any thoughts?? or an explanation of why hes wrong please?

Full of it... your macro will out compete other forms of algae by using nitrates phosphates and other compounds needed for micro algae growth.

It needs light to live, ask him what the purpose of the sun is in that shines on our planet then please

i figured, he was trying to talk me out of the algae and light because it would create tons of hair algae and it would clog my skimmer and return. i just smiled and said wow thanks, dont want to piss him off yet, he has super cheap live rock, with tons of pink and purple and hitch hikers and cool stuff, at 4.99 a pound, its the cheapest ive seen.

Yeah, really! I'm close enough to drive up there in 4 hours, too. I think maybe I'll do that one of these days, come to think of it.

A lot of shop owners don't know much about the wonders of mud & macroalgae filters yet, so I guess we can cut the guy a little bit of slack, unless he was just being a real stooge about it.

not being a stooge, its just hard to talk to people like this still, because i dont know all the facts myself yet, and when he throws up something that i havent thought of, i start to question it... but ill be getting some rock soon, all my levels are great, so i will let you all know whether he gives me the good stuff of the bad. he has 2 tanks next to each other, one is packed with great looking rock, and one has pretty much base rock in it, and i didnt ask which he sold, the good stuff might just be his seed tank.
