ok guys, my little tank is comming along, it cycled fine, so i got a few crabs, snails, and a pair of peppermint shrimp, im starting to see alot of green algae starting, (maybe brown, im color blind) buts its real small right now.
i know im expecting a ton of algae, (mp get that macro in the mail!!!) i was just wondering how long i can expect this to happen... and things are going good if one of my shrimp already molted right? thats a good sign?

I couldn't post what I am most proud of on here. The pic would be way too big.

no one is gonna answer the question? about how long the algae blooms will last? before they start to die out? on average?

I never had diatom problems but i had cyano problems for first couple months which is normal, took a couple months for everything to start looking like a reef........... I think a topic on LR is up, for different kinds out there, i'll try and dig up some more info, im really and always enjoyed the look of Lalo LR.

There is no set "regular" amount of time it takes. There are too many factors involved. Down here the brown stuff can last for several months, while in other areas it might be practically gone before you ever notice it. Excess silicate + phosphate = diatoms, and there's no way of knowing how much you have unless you test for them, and even if you knew it's still anybody's guess. Either one doesn't really tend to fuel diatoms all that much, which is why sometimes some people who use ordinary sand don't have problems, but the combination of the two is pure trouble. new tanks usually have too much of both, to a varying degree, but once either one is used up enough the diatoms crash. How long does it take? There's no telling. You can help speed things up by avoiding use of silica sand and by avoiding overfeeding. Skimming helps, and if you wipe the glass clean, be super-duper careful to remove the brown algae from the tank instead of just knocking back into the water. This will a: keep it from spreading and b: export these excess nutrients. Eventually the good coralline algae & other more desirable organisms will be able to use up all the fuel and the diatoms will vanish.

thanks salt, once again you pull through... so. would the addition of macro algae to the system help out-compete the bad algae? (its brown by the way, my gf showed up and helped me out) its not large yet, just showing a film over everything. but i would like to get it out asap.

Macro will help by sucking up phosphate, but it won't eat all that much silicate. That's good enough, though. It will also promote good conditions in the tank for the other organisms which will eat up all the excess silicate & phosphate. Don't expect overnight miracle results, but don't be shocked if you get them, either. it could go either way. You don't have a lot of rock yet, which means you don't have much coralline, which means the diatoms don't have much competition.

Argh diatoms! I had a bunch of trouble with them while setting up my nano. However once I added some C. Taxifolia (sadly we there is no cheato in Aus) to my HOB filter it has almost disapeared. Eventually, once your tank matures and becomes stable, they should go away anyway but this can take a long time and it is unpleasant to be looking a a tank covered in them for months and months. Iim not sure if you have one, but a protein skimmer would also extract nutrients from the water, and in turn reduce the amount of diatoms.
In the end just be patient! They will go away eventually! |
