I do not use it nor do I recommend it to others in a Reef. Great for FO though.

Would carbon be beneficial in a reef set up in which possible 'chemical warfare' (aleopathy?) among corals was occuring, or would an adequate skimmer and routine water changes allieviate that?

It depends on the Carbon. I forget which type/brand but some will release Phosphates. When I was in the reef game I never used it just because of that issue.
