Hang on back filter. Aquaclears are good. Marineland filters are good as well. Don't get a cheap filter, you get what you pay for.
And don't give all your filter media away or you'll end up having to recycle the tank (unless its been empty for awhile...).

How many sponge filters would I need to filter it all?

If you understock greatly and do weekly water changes, 1 sponge filter rated for a 30-40g tank would be sufficient. If you overstock or have messy fish...forget the sponge filter.

The topfin 10 is good for a 5 gallon tank. Its kind of wimpy. The aquaclear has a lot more flow. If you already own an airpump. A sponge filter, a box filter, or better yet one of each are the cheapest route.

I am just going to clean my penguin 300 or 350 and use that as the aquaclear 20's at petsmart are around $50
