Default Could anyone tell me what this is?

Hi. I am new and I bought a tank from a friend of mine, and he also gave me this. Does anyone knows what this is?

Thank you and sorry for the dumb question

It's a power head for an undergravel filter, with an air intake. Not sure of the model.

You attach it to the top of the tube on the undergravel filter, and it pumps water through it, giving you much better waterflow than an air pump alone.

Default Does it work?

I have a powerhead like that, but mine does not have that 'bulge' on the side. It looks like it got so hot on the inside, that it expanded. I could be wrong, but I would recommend caution when first trying it.

I noticed that bulge too - not sure why it has that - I personally would not reccomend using it..

That IS weird, isn't it? Even a melted hotspot should probably not be so perfectly round.
