Wow, I just found this thread and I'm sorry it went unanswered for so long.

We would need to know the type of overflow you have.

Does it have a U shaped tube from inside the tank to the outside box? Or is it the CPR type?

If you could post a picture I can tell you which type it is and what you need to do. Basically, The CPR type does use a Powerhead to maintain/restart the siphon after an outage whereas the U tube type does not need one and should restart itself.

Post up a pic of the overflow and I'll help you get going.

get your tank drilled!, or buy one that is,. we custom make acrylic aquariums at the shop i work at. I cant tell you how many times I have sold a hang on overflow box just to have the customer come back and have his tank drilled, or buy one that is. if your gonna go sump, go drilled. its easier, alot less of a headache, and a hundred times quieter. our acrylic guy hates making them and i dont blame him, they all usually end up in the trash or back at the shop. the cost to have your tank drilled is nominal. around 20 to 30 bucks a hole. the only problem is , if you have a glass tank most places wont garantee the work, so thats something to concider also. if there is no place to get your tank drilled in you town, most of the bigger retail places like petco and petsmart now sell pre drilled glass tanks.
