Your local pet store? Petco should carry them if you have one in your area, my store doesn't though because they are illegal to sell in Tennessee. If you don't see them in your local pet store ask about them and see if they are legal to sell in CA, I think the reasoning is that they can carry Salmonella, but we sell all sorts of reptiles that can carry alot worse.

this place sells them
www.turtlesale.com
you need to read the care sheets on the message boards if you dont already know about them
they require extra calcium and a uvb light as well as a basking light to keep their shells in good condition
that place sells the little tiny baby ones

I love softshells, mine is about nine inches and lives in a big tank with tankbusting fish. What size tank do you have and what else are you planning to keep with your turtle?

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded:
Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.
