I am thinking about breeding my bettas, but I don't have enough room for all of them, so before I actually breed them, I was wondering is any of you would take them. They would be free!

Yeah, I know, I just don't know because I've heard shipping can cost up to $20! And I think that is too much for one little fish, but I live in colorado, so how much do you think it would cost from where I live to where you are?

I'm not sure, but I would expect that $15-$20 would be normal for anywhere in the US. They would have to go air-mail, which is basically overnight/1-day delivery. It would be expensive to ship them. However if they have any fish auctions, or breeder's conventions in your area you might be able to sell them there.

Alisha, I think it is very kind of you to make that offer. You might also consider taking them to your local fish shop. If they are nice, you could trade for supplies.

Hi Alisha, I used to breed bettas. Selling them to the LFS is a good option, they will usually give you $1 per fish, but they want them big, at least 6 - 12 months old. As for shipping them, bettas ship very well using priority (2 -3 days) via USPS.
My first spawn, I raised about 20 to adults. The spawns that followed were larger, as I learned from my mistakes. The fry are very small and quite fragile, but with a lot of TLC you should have no problems at all. Good luck in your venture, betta breeding is an awesome experience! Shannon |

I, too, used to crank them out like crazy, and I sold them in my store for wholesale-to-the-public prices.
As for shipping, bettas are easy to send for cheap because they're easy keep alive with very little water. You could send 4-6 of them in a small box for the flat rate of 7.70 and they'd be fine. I'm sure that anyone who wanted bettas would see the great value in a deal like that, and you might find that people would actually be happy to pay a bit for the fish, too. Petshop bettas are already middle-aged by the time they're offered for sale, so some younger ones might have some real appeal. Of course, you first have to see if you can really produce them in the first place. |

I'd take some if you gave away enough to make the shipping fee worth it. We will see when you let us know how many hatched.

Have to consider, fish bags cost money, heat packs cost money, food to raise the fish cost money... Not to mention the time involved and the expense of the water and heat for them.....
I'd have to recommend taking them to your local fish store when they are big enough. Especially if you have no experience in shipping live fish. There is more to putting the fish in the bag and into a box and it CAN turn into a disaster. NO one wants to send thier babies off to certain doom. You can grow out fish big enough to sell to the LPS in 3 to 4 months easy. I've been breeding those fishies for a long time and with a little TLC, 4 months to a sellable fish is a reasonable thing to do.... *And do it again!* ~gem~ |
