I'm a 49 year old alumni of Iowa State University, married with a tween and teen daughters. I work in a county hospital inpatient locked adult psych unit as a CMA/Med Tech.
I've been in the freshwater fish keeping hobby for some 20 years, kept all kinds of fish though I'm partial to cichlids more partial to New World cichlids and more partial still to oscars :lol:
I've had multiple tank syndrome
in past which didn't help the demise of my first marriage, but presently I have just the one 55 gallon housing one tiger oscar I got when s/he was only 2" long. This time I'm running no substrate (I painted the bottom glass a coppery sand color) and find it much easier to keep up on the oscar's crappola with a simple fish net keeping the nitrates down.
I have the tank decorated with Tetra's Water Wonder artificial plants and faux logs/rocks which their plants attach to, those of you who have kept oscars know you need sturdy decor the oscar can assault on a regular basis.
For filtration I have a Marineland canister and MagnumHOT HOB both filled with API Bio-stars and Biomax with prefilter sponges over their intakes. I also have an Emperor HOB with floss and biowheel and Aqua-Tech HOB with floss and bio-pads.
Oscars are dirty fish eh, though I think worth it.
